This latest form of electron ptychography will enable scientists to locate individual atoms in all three dimensions when they might be otherwise hidden using other imaging methods. But even at zero temperature, atoms still have quantum fluctuations, so the improvement would not be very large. The researchers could possibly top their record again by using a material that consists of heavier atoms, which wobble less, or by cooling down the sample. “When we talk about temperature, what we’re actually measuring is the average speed of how much the atoms are jiggling.” “With these new algorithms, we’re now able to correct for all the blurring of our microscope to the point that the largest blurring factor we have left is the fact that the atoms themselves are wobbling, because that’s what happens to atoms at finite temperature,” Muller said. This data is then reconstructed via complex algorithms, resulting in an ultraprecise image with picometer (one-trillionth of a meter) precision. The detector is slightly defocused, blurring the beam, in order to capture the widest range of data possible. “By seeing how the pattern changes, we are able to compute the shape of the object that caused the pattern.” “We’re chasing speckle patterns that look a lot like those laser-pointer patterns that cats are equally fascinated by,” Muller said. Ptychography works by scanning overlapping scattering patterns from a material sample and looking for changes in the overlapping region. It also solves a long-standing problem – undoing the multiple scattering of the beam in the sample, which Hans Bethe laid out in 1928 – that has blocked us from doing this in the past.” This opens up a whole lot of new measurement possibilities of things we’ve wanted to do for a very long time. We basically can now figure out where the atoms are in a very easy way. “It’s reached a regime which is effectively going to be an ultimate limit for resolution. ![]() “This doesn’t just set a new record,” Muller said. The paper’s lead author is postdoctoral researcher Zhen Chen. The group’s paper, “Electron Ptychography Achieves Atomic-Resolution Limits Set by Lattice Vibrations,” published May 20 in Science. But given how incredibly tiny atoms are, looking at this photo is probably the closest you’re going to get.The resolution is so fine-tuned, the only blurring that remains is the thermal jiggling of the atoms themselves. This image is a long exposure shot, which means even with all that laser light, it’s still too faint to pick up without equipment. ![]() ![]() Still, that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to see the atom with your naked eye. With enough energized electrons giving off enough light, it’s possible for an ordinary camera to image the atom. Occasionally, these energized electrons will give off light. The strontium atom in the photo is hit by a high-powered laser, which causes the electrons orbiting the strontium atom to become more energized. Normally this would still be much too small to see, but this setup employs a clever trick to make the atom much brighter. This particular apparatus uses strontium because of its size: Strontium has 38 protons, and the diameter of a strontium atom is a few millionths of a millimeter. That’s the strontium atom, illuminated by a blue-violet laser. If you look very closely at the center of the photo, you’ll see a faint blue dot. Music is a key element, with Evan refusing to abandon the clumsy gramophone that reconnects him with his own ancestry, even as he strives to become the “vagabond of dreams” of whom Karamakate has spoken so intensely. “Don’t let our song fade away,” Karamakate tells the young boys, a phrase mournfully echoed in the closing dedication. When Théo and his companion Manduca (Yauenkü Migue) seek supplies at an upriver Catholic mission, they find “orphans of the rubber wars” being beaten into forgetting their native tongue by a priest who claims to be saving them from “cannibalism and ignorance”. Memories (both present and absent) flow back and forth through this story. David Gallego’s breathtaking 35mm cinematography lends widescreen monochrome beauty Such coexistence is central to the film’s own form, with images of persistent water uniting distant time periods past, present and future flowing together in a single unending stream, separate boats on the same river. “You are not one – you are two men,” Karamakate tells Evan as he retraces Théo’s steps, apparently perceiving his separate companions to be two incarnations of the same soul. Skilfully fusing the apparently logical manmade narratives of its western explorers with the animal imagery and fluid time-structures of Amazonian myth (the title invokes celestial beings descending to earth on a giant anaconda), Guerra conjures a complex landscape that straddles the divide between dreamy invention, ethnographic document and socio-political tract. Crucially, it is through Karamakate’s eyes that we come to view the unfolding narrative, reversing the colonial modes that have exoticised the jungle as merely a maddening subset of European or north American experience. Having lost his tribe, believed to have been wiped out by rubber barons, the ageing Karamakate fears that he has become a “ chullachaqui” – an ‘empty, hollow’ version of himself that has “no memories”, but “drifts around in the world… lost in time without time”. Our true focus, however, is Karamakate, the warrior-shaman who guides both men, played in his younger, more fiery years by Nilbio Torres, and in dissolute later life by Antonio Bolívar. ![]() ![]() Watch a trailer for Embrace of the Serpent. Exhaled aerosols occur in multiple size modes that are associated with different generation sites and production mechanisms in the respiratory tract. ![]() Advances in aerosol measurement techniques, such as aerodynamic and scanning mobility particle sizing, have shown that the majority of exhaled aerosols are smaller than 5 μm, and a large fraction are <1 μm for most respiratory activities, including those produced during breathing, talking, and coughing. Respiratory droplets and aerosols can be generated by various expiratory activities. Controversy surrounding how COVID-19 is transmitted and what interventions are needed to control the pandemic has revealed a critical need to better understand the airborne transmission pathway of respiratory viruses, which will allow for better-informed strategies to mitigate the transmission of respiratory infections. Droplet and fomite transmission of SARS-CoV-2 alone cannot account for the numerous superspreading events and differences in transmission between indoor and outdoor environments observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The limitations of traditional views of droplet, fomite, and airborne transmission were illuminated during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is robust evidence supporting the airborne transmission of many respiratory viruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)–CoV, influenza virus, human rhinovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Airborne transmission is traditionally defined as involving the inhalation of infectious aerosols or “droplet nuclei” smaller than 5 μm and mainly at a distance of >1 to 2 m away from the infected individual, and such transmission has been thought to be relevant only for “unusual” diseases. ![]() GKA Structured Abstract BACKGROUNDĮxposure to droplets produced in the coughs and sneezes of infected individuals or contact with droplet-contaminated surfaces (fomites) have been widely perceived as the dominant transmission modes for respiratory pathogens. The authors suggest that airborne transmission may be the dominant form of transmission for several respiratory pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, and that further understanding of the mechanisms underlying infection from the airborne route will better inform mitigation measures. review recent advances in understanding airborne transmission gained from studying the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections and other respiratory pathogens. However, several respiratory pathogens are known to spread through small respiratory aerosols, which can float and travel in air flows, infecting people who inhale them at short and long distances from the infected person. ![]() Traditionally, it was thought that respiratory pathogens spread between people through large droplets produced in coughs and through contact with contaminated surfaces (fomites). The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted controversies and unknowns about how respiratory pathogens spread between hosts. |
